The unprecedented result in North Shropshire saw a landslide 34% swing from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats.
The by-election, brought about the resignation of Conservative MP Owen Patterson, following the lobbying scandal, saw the Lib Dems leapfrog Labour as they shot from 10% to 47% to win the seat. North Shropshire has previously only ever elected Conservative MPs.
The shock result deals a major blow to Boris Johnson and follows criticism around the No 10 party, sleaze and a revolt by his own backbenchers over his handling of Covid.
Leader of the BCP Liberal Democrats and Parliamentary Spokesperson for Mid Dorset & North Poole, Councillor Vikki Slade, said:
“The parallels between North Shropshire and Dorset are clear - people are fed up with complacent Conservatives and the sleaze surrounding the current government. They are worried about local services, like the very long waiting times for ambulances.
“This stunning by-election victory happened because local people got involved to demand better for their community. We expect to see a surge in Lib Dem membership in Dorset following the win and we welcome all new supporters as we set out our positive alternative vision for a better future.
“For the first time in their history, the by-election saw people elect a hard-working, local Lib Dem as their MP. We are clearly energised by this result and we are launching our campaign to follow in their footsteps. Positive change is coming to Dorset.”
