The Poole Liberal Democrats have announced their candidates for the local elections in May. Standing in Penn Hill will be Brian Clements and Richard Douglas.
Brian Clements was the leader of Poole Council for 12 years (1991-2003) and a Newtown ward councillor for 30 years (1985-2015). He had intended to retire from politics in 2015 but the way the Conservatives have changed Poole's local politics have motivated him to fight to restore democracy for local people.
Richard Douglas worked in counterterrorism in the UK and overseas, and earned operations medals working in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2017, he made the decision to retrain as a primary school teacher with Teach First, a charity focused on ending the inequality in education.
Our team have set out their key priorities for the ward:
- fighting for Poole’s voice on the centralised Planning Board to ensure Penn Hill residents’ views are heard and to prevent inappropriate and infill development
- continuing to support local traders along Ashley Road and extend this support to other shopping districts in Penn Hill
- ensuring that the council continue to maintain local green spaces, such as Alexandra Park, despite the potential centralisation of services to Bournemouth
